49ers' Jake Tonges: The Breakout Star at Tight End (2025)

For years, the San Francisco 49ers have been searching for the perfect sidekick to their star tight end, George Kittle. Have they finally found their answer? It's a question that's been lingering in the minds of fans, especially after a series of attempts to find a reliable No. 2 tight end. After Kittle's impressive breakout season in 2018, the team tried various options, hoping to find someone who could complement Kittle's skills both as a blocker and a receiver.

First, there was Ross Dwelley, who got a chance to step up. Then, in 2020, when Kittle faced injuries, the 49ers brought in Jordan Reed, and also drafted Charlie Woerner. However, none of these players managed to fully fill the role. After Woerner left, the team signed Eric Saubert to a one-year deal. Unfortunately, none of these moves quite clicked, leaving the 49ers still searching for that ideal complement.

The team truly needs a solid blocker from that TE2 position, a role that Woerner fulfilled. That's why they signed Luke Farrell to a three-year deal this past offseason. But here's where it gets controversial: Despite the expectations, it hasn't been Farrell who's stolen the spotlight. Instead, it's Jake Tonges, who surprisingly made the roster in 2024.

Through the first five games, Tonges has emerged as a key player, ranking fourth on the team in receiving yards. He's caught 19 passes for 166 yards and an impressive three touchdowns. His 27 targets are second only to Christian McCaffrey and Ricky Pearsall, and his touchdowns are tied for the team lead.

After spending his first three NFL seasons without a single catch, Tonges has seemingly appeared out of nowhere.

Coach Kyle Shanahan has been impressed with Tonges, saying, “Jake’s given us a lot of confidence… each week he’s been thrown in a lot of situations he hasn’t been in before and I think he’s rose to the occasion on all of them.” He highlighted Tonges' ability to make impressive catches and improve in the run game, even after tough hits.

Tonges, originally an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Bears, joined the 49ers last offseason. He earned his spot on the 53-man roster after a strong showing in training camp. Now, at age 26, he's stepping into his biggest role yet.

George Kittle is expected to return next week, but Tonges has proven he can handle the secondary tight end role. He's likely to share playing time with Luke Farrell. A more capable pass-catcher like Tonges will take some pressure off Kittle as he returns from injury.

What do you think? Do you believe Tonges can maintain this level of performance? Will he become a reliable asset for the 49ers? Share your thoughts in the comments!
