As virtuous men pass mildly away,
And whisper to their souls to go,
Whilst some of their sad friends do say
The breath goes now, and some say, No:
So let us melt, and make no noise,
No tear-floods, nor sigh-tempests move;
'Twere profanation of our joys
To tell the laity our love.
Moving of th' earth brings harms and fears,
Men reckon what it did, and meant;
But trepidation of the spheres,
Though greater far, is innocent.
Dull sublunary lovers' love
(Whose soul is sense) cannot admit
Absence, because it doth remove
Those things which elemented it.
But we by a love so much refined,
That our selves know not what it is,
Inter-assured of the mind,
Care less, eyes, lips, and hands to miss.
Our two souls therefore, which are one,
Though I must go, endure not yet
A breach, but an expansion,
Like gold to airy thinness beat.
If they be two, they are two so
As stiff twin compasses are two;
Thy soul, the fixed foot, makes no show
To move, but doth, if the other do.
And though it in the center sit,
Yet when the other far doth roam,
It leans and hearkens after it,
And grows erect, as that comes home.
Such wilt thou be to me, who must,
Like th' other foot, obliquely run;
Thy firmness makes my circle just,
And makes me end where I begun.

슬픔에 젖은 친구들이 지금 숨이 멎으면
누군가는 '그의 숨이 멎었다'고 , 누군가는 '아니다' 라고 소란을 피우는 동안에
고결한 사람은 조용히 생을 마감하며
그들의 영혼에게 가자고 속삭이듯
그렇게 우리도 자연스럽게, 소란스럽지 않게
눈물의 홍수도, 한숨의 폭풍도 보이지 맙시다
세속의 사람들에게 우리의 사랑을 말하는것은
우리의 기쁨을 모독하는 것일테니...
지구의 동요는 재해와 공포를 초래하니,
사람들은 그 피해가 어떤것인지를 파악하려 한다오
하지만 천구의 진동은
훨씬 대단할지라도, 해를 끼치지 않소
따분한 지상의 연인들이 나누는 사랑은
그 본질이 감각에 있어 서로의 부재를 받아들이지 못하오
이는 그 사람의 부재가
사랑을 이루는 감각을 지우기 때문이라오
하지만 우리는 지고지순한 사랑으로
부재가 무엇인지 알지 못할정도로
서로의 마음을 확실히 믿고 있기에
눈과 입술, 손이 멀어지는것을 걱정하지 않소
우리의 영혼은 결국 하나요
비록 나는 떠나야 하지만...
그것은 끊기는 것이 아니라 다만 늘어나는 것이외다
마치 두드려 아주 얇아진 금박처럼...
만일 우리의 영혼이 둘이라면,
그것은 아마 견고한 한쌍의 컴퍼스 다리와 같소
그대의 영혼은 고정된 다리여서 움직이는 기색도 없을 것이오
하지만 다른 다리가 움직이면, 따라 움직일 것이라오
그대는 내게 그런 존재요
나는 비스듬하게 달려가는 다른 다리가 되겠지만
그대의 굳건함은 내 원을 바로 그리게 하고
내가 시작한 곳에서 끝낼 수 있게 해준다오
망자는 바로 그대: 「누구를 위하여 종은 울리나」, 존 던의 기도문 망자는 바로 그대 「누구를 위하여 종은 울리나」 "For Whom the Bell Tolls" "Por quien volvran las campanas" 존 던의 기도문 1988년 중판본이고 어니스트 헤밍웨이 관련 강의를 하거나 토머스 그레이의 「시골묘지에서 쓴 비가」 한 대목을 인용할 때 존 던의 기도문을 소개한다. 존 던(John Donne: 1572~1632)은 요사이는 영문학 전공자나 아는 시인이지만 의외의 세련된 시풍으로 현대에 들어와 상당히 주목받는 작가이다. 문학사조로는 '형이상학파'라고 분류한다. 헤밍웨이의 스페인 내전을 배경으로 한 소설 『누구를 위하여 종은 울리나』가 바로 존 던의 기도문 한 구절에서 제목을 취했다. 기도 전문 No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thine own or of thine friend's were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind. It tolls for thee. 유럽은 교회 중심으로 돌아가는 사회여서 결혼식이나 유아세례 때는 물론이고 동네 주민이 사망해도 (조)종을 친다. 그러면 밭 갈다가, 소젖 짜다가 듣고 아, 웨스틀런드 씨 댁 모친이 하늘나라로 떠났구나, 때로는 어라, 누구지? '존 던(Donne, John.)'은 영국 형이상학파의 최대 시인으로 불리고 있는 인물로, 대담한 연애시와 
풍자시를 주로 썼던 시인이다.
'누구를 위하여 종은 울리나'라는 시는 같은 이름의 헤밍웨이 소설로 유명해진 작품이다.
'던'의 기도문 중의 마지막 부분인 이 시는 형이상시의 진면목을 보여주고 있다.
인간 존재에 대한 깊이 있는 해명 그리고, 종의 상징에 의해 중후한 맛을 주는 시로 평가되는
산문시가 '누구를 위하여 종은 울리나'이다.
*이 詩는 John Donne이 일 때문에 오랫동안 집을 비워야 하자
슬퍼하는 아내를 위로하기 위해 지은 시다.
