Amiga 1200 Longplay Putty Squad (W) : MadMatty : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive (2025)

Putty Squad developed by System3 in 1994. Released in December of 2013 and was made freely available on the official System3 website to download. It is no longer available there.

"The C.I.A. has, formed a crack covert team to parachute into hostile areas and rescue the Putty M.I.A.S. The team consists of Super Putty and his one time enemy Dweezil the Ginger Cat. They must also terminate the rogue Commander, Naplam the Cat who having gone crazy has set himself up as a god to the native population of spotted frogs in the area. This is their mission and they must not fail or the Putty M.I.A.s are doomed."

Putty Squad has quite the history with versions made for Super Nintendo, PC Dos, Genesis and the Amiga 1200 and only the SNES version got a commercial release for ...reasons. All due for release in 1994 the other versions were shelved with only the Amiga version known to be complete. (A demo of the dos game exists as well as an early build of the genesis game with no sound). There were a few attempts to get Putty Squad released on the Amiga with Alive Mediasoft looking to publish the game but after much waiting, it never happened. Somewhere around 2012 Interest in putty squad had surfaced and System 3 went on to make the game for PS4,PS Vita and everything else after. The game was faithful to the original in an early cgi 3d gfx form. But that's not all, with the Amiga Source at hand a chance to get the Amiga version out presented it self. This would be assembled by Galahad of Fairlight and in December of 2013 the game published on System 3 own website, downloadable for free as a set of disk images for use in an emu or written to floppy disks for use on original hardware.

The gameplay is completely different to Putty. In this game we need to rescue multiple putties that have been trapped or captured. We can dart around the level stretching, punching, absorbing as well as collecting food, nitro and a balloon. There are many enemy types, some require specific ways to defeat. Collecting stars boosts you special ability awarding shocking hands, arrows and running putty bombs. Losing lives lowers your stars and your ability. Stronger enemies like mortar launchers are especially annoying and require Nitro or a bomb from Dweezil to destroy and this goes for captured puttys as well. There are other enemies that also need Nitro to destroy, usually all the bigger ones. It is also possible to capture and morph into the Rocket knight to destroy some things, Getting into the balloon allows you to fly around the level as well as bomb things if you have nitro. At a pinch you can also call upon dweezel to act as a spring or drop a bomb and you can knock him around into a specific position. The game can be quite long but thankfully each level has a password so you can continue another time.

The longplay goes through all 35 levels including any hidden levels encountered. These appear as hidden doors in some levels. If you go through them, you have a chance to pick up plenty of bonus stars and once done, you can return to the level you came from and continue on. The door also acts as a checkpoint if you lose a life. Some levels have a set of glasses to reveal the doors without having to be near them. The playthrough is by no means optimal and I got more careless as a progressed later in the game.

Was the game worth the wait? Overall the game is exactly the same as the demo we had available for all those years and with the full game having forty odd levels, it's quite amazing that it all fits on two disks and load times between stages are almost instant. Whilst gaming has moved on from this style of game, and Amiga owners are few and far between, the game still manages to impress and great to see a commercial quality game appearing on the old platform, even if it was made decades ago. The game would be quite heavily expanded upon for modern consoles including achievements and other collectables as well as additional presentation and quality of life improvements within the game. I think it was Dr Sushi's Snack of Death level where there was no food on the level maybe making it the most challenging level to beat without losing a life. The music can be annoying with sounds cutting out when sfx is played but it wouldn't have been right to play with sfx only and some sounds are really quit like death and star collecting.

Note: There are a few issues with the game but nothing game breaking. Sometimes you can pass through walls or objects you are not meant to which can help a lot. The score reel will max out two third into the game if you try to complete it in one long run. Completing the game does not allow you to enter a hghscore name, much like Putty. I've been a bit creative in editing to add it in and the ending animation is cut short jumping back to the title screen. Some of these were fixed in the WHDload release.
