A woman, Emily Hausman, was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic melanoma in her breast just weeks after giving birth. Hausman's story began with her desire to become a mother. She took advantage of her former job's Progyny fertility benefits and froze her eggs in February 2020. In July, she met someone she thought was the love of her life, but their relationship didn't last. In May 2024, she selected a donor and had an embryo transferred in September. However, her life took a turn when she was laid off from her magazine job in November 2024.
Despite these setbacks, Hausman's life took a positive turn when she gave birth to her son, Ezekiel, in May 2025. However, things took a turn for the worse when doctors discovered a blood clot in June, requiring a dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure. This was followed by an infection that left her hospitalized for four days.
The infection led to endometritis, an inflammation of the uterine lining. Hausman's health continued to decline, and she decided to stop breastfeeding due to feeling run down. During her six-week post-op appointment for a cesarean section, an ultrasound and biopsy revealed a shocking diagnosis: Stage 4 metastatic melanoma in her breast, as well as on her pancreas and in the lymph nodes surrounding her lung.
The origin of the cancer remains a mystery. Hausman has always worn sunscreen, and no evidence of melanoma was found on her skin. Doctors explored various possibilities, even checking her colon and eyes, but all tests came back negative. They concluded that the cancer likely developed after her pregnancy.
Hausman's treatment plan included four rounds of aggressive immunotherapy, but she only completed two in October due to severe side effects and a suspected case of ulcerative colitis. Emergency doctors discovered kidney failure, leading to a five-day hospitalization and the suspension of her treatment. She is now on a steroid and recovering, with plans to restart treatment early next year.
Despite her challenges, Hausman remains resilient. She leans on her loved ones, including her parents and best friend, who provide support and assistance. She also finds strength in her medical team, particularly the SOS team at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, which offers palliative care and connects her with a nutritionist, psychiatrist, and a program to rebuild her physical strength.
