Toyota Recalls Over 1 Million Cars for Backup Camera Issues: A Safety Concern for Drivers
Toyota has issued a massive recall affecting over 1 million vehicles due to a potential defect in the rearview camera system. This issue could cause the camera to malfunction, posing a significant safety risk to drivers and pedestrians. The recall was prompted by reports of the camera freezing or failing to display properly when the driver performs certain actions soon after starting the vehicle.
The problem stems from the Parking Assist ECU software, which can cause the rearview image to freeze when reverse is selected within a specific time frame after starting the car. Alternatively, the image may not display at the next startup if the car is turned on and then off within a specific time. This malfunction occurs due to a software glitch, where two 23-millisecond camera optical alignment data writing processes happen randomly during the first 12.5 seconds after ignition.
Toyota discovered this issue during an investigation in April 2024, following reports from Japan. The automaker decided to issue a recall as the vehicles could fail to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
