  • Best yogurt sauce for chicken. If you haven't made my Chicken Kofta Kebabs yet, you'll love them with this white, creamy sauce.

A few notes about the ingredients:

  1. Greek yogurt - Make sure to use plain greek yogurt. If the yogurt is sweetened or flavored in any way, it will not be suitable for a savory yogurt sauce.
  2. Lemon zest - Adding lemon zest in addition to lemon juice will give your dill sauce the strongest lemon flavor. Without the zest, the yogurt sauce will still be tangy and bright but it will not have much lemon flavor. Follow this tutorial to learn how to cut lemons into slices and wedges!
  3. Dill - Fresh dill is highly preferred over dried dill. Adjust the amount in this recipe to your personal preference.
  4. Garlic - Fresh minced garlic is going to create the best flavor and is recommended over using garlic powder.

📓 Instructions

⁉️ Substitutions and Alterations

  • Out of Greek yogurt? Try a 1:1 ratio of sour cream. It has a similar tartness and thickness to greek yogurt and will work better than using a thinner, regular yogurt.
  • Adjust the spices. Add additional salt and pepper to taste and substitute dried dill when absolutely necessary.
  • Use it as a salad dressing. Add a bit of water or milk to thin it out and drizzle it over your favorite Mediterranean salad.

Ways to Serve Yogurt Sauce

  • With Chicken Kofta Kebabs.
  • As a veggie dip with raw carrot sticks, broccoli florets, cauliflower, snap peas, bell peppers, etc.
  • As a burger sauce on Loaded Burger Bowls or on a Mediterranean Turkey Burger.
  • Served over baked salmon.
  • As an alternative cool dipper for Buffalo Turkey Meatballs.
  • With Greek Chicken Gyros or Vegetarian Mushroom Gyros.
  • Drizzled over Jerusalem Salad.
  • As a tangy dipping sauce for Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Patties, Air Fryer Carrot Fries, and Air Fryer Garlic Parmesan Wings.

❄️ How to Store

To store: For optimal freshness, this creamy sauce will last for 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator. It may last a bit longer if stored in an air tight glass container.

Freezing is not recommended because it would change the texture of the Greek yogurt and become a different consistency when thawed.

If served as a dip at a party, it will last on the counter for about 2 hours before needing to be refrigerated. However, it is best to keep it chilled if possible.

🔍 FAQs

What is the difference between dill yogurt sauce and tzatziki?

This dill yogurt sauce and tzatziki are very similar. The only difference between the two is that tzatziki traditionally includes diced cucumber and often includes fresh herbs like mint or parsley.

Can yogurt sauce be served warm?

Although this lemon and dill yogurt sauce is most often served cold, it can be served warm, if desired. Simply microwave until warm or heat over low heat in a sauce pan until warmed through. Serve as desired with pita, kebabs, gyros, falafel, and more.

How do I thicken yogurt sauce?

The best way to ensure you have a thick sauce is to use a quality Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt removes the excess liquid that regular yogurts contain and is much thicker and creamier. This will help keep your creamy dill sauce thick and easy to dollop on top of your protein of choice.

💭 One More Tip

Use fresh herbs. Similar to my Jerusalem salad, this dill sauce is best tasting when made with fresh herbs.
